TikTok Faces Potential Ban This Month: Steps Users Can Take to Get Ready

TikTok: A Cornerstone of Modern Entertainment

TikTok has become a go-to platform for entertainment, offering everything from comedic skits and makeup tutorials to social commentary and news updates.

The Looming Ban

However, TikTok could be removed from U.S. app stores as early as January 19 if the Supreme Court does not intervene to block a federal law. This law requires TikTok to sever ties with its China-based parent company or face a nationwide ban.

President-elect Donald Trump, who takes office on January 20, has requested the Supreme Court to pause the law. He aims to negotiate a “political resolution” during his second term. On January 12, the Court heard oral arguments about the case, and a decision is expected within days.

TikTok’s Widespread Impact

TikTok boasts over 170 million U.S. users, including the majority of teens and a third of adults, according to Pew Research Center. If you’re a devoted user or a creator relying on TikTok for income, here’s how you can prepare.

What Happens on January 19?

If the law goes into effect:

  • TikTok will disappear from Apple and Google app stores, making it unavailable for new downloads.
  • Current users will retain access, but the app will no longer receive updates, security patches, or bug fixes. Over time, this could degrade the app’s performance and security, eventually rendering it unusable.

Can Users Work Around the Ban?

Yes, but it may require technical expertise:

  1. Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network):
A VPN allows users to mask their location and access TikTok by routing data through servers in other countries. Adjustments to phone settings may enable users to access a different country’s app store to download or update TikTok.

However, widespread use of VPNs could prompt companies like Apple or Google to restrict access further, especially as they navigate their relationship with Trump’s administration.

  2. Sideloading on Android Devices:
Android users may bypass app stores by downloading TikTok updates through third-party app stores. However, this approach bypasses the security measures of official stores and could expose users to malware, warns telecommunications expert Gus Hurwitz.

Saving Your Favorite TikTok Content

TikTok lets users download their own posts and certain videos from other creators. However, some content may be unavailable for download due to restrictions, such as private accounts or accounts owned by users under 16.

You can also request a copy of your TikTok data, including your viewing and comment history. The platform may take a few days to process your request.

Exploring Alternative Platforms

If TikTok is banned, other platforms are poised to gain traction:

  • Major Competitors:
Instagram’s Reels and YouTube’s Shorts offer TikTok-like features and could attract displaced users. Snapchat is another likely beneficiary.

  • Niche Platforms:
For younger or more niche audiences, platforms like Triller (focused on music videos), Zigazoo (designed for kids), and Twitch (Amazon’s live-streaming service) are viable alternatives.

While Meta’s platforms and YouTube are positioned to capture much of TikTok’s user base, experts suggest that Gen Z users may prefer newer, less mainstream options.
