Cardinals Step Up to Host Rams-Vikings Wild Card Game Amid California Wildfires
In the early hours of Tuesday, Michael Bidwill, owner of the Arizona Cardinals, received an urgent call from Dawn Aponte, the NFL’s chief administrative officer of football operations. The worsening wildfires in Southern California threatened the ability to hold the Los Angeles Rams’ playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings at SoFi Stadium

Bidwill’s involvement came as no surprise; State Farm Stadium had long been part of the NFL's contingency plans for such emergencies. “This wasn’t a last-minute decision,” noted NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, highlighting that preparations began well before the season started.
Once the possibility of relocation became clear, Bidwill initiated internal meetings, and by Thursday afternoon, the league officially decided to move the game to Arizona. On Monday, just six days after the initial call, the Rams and Vikings faced off in front of 64,515 fans at State Farm Stadium, marking only the second time in NFL history that a playoff game, excluding Super Bowls, was relocated.
Beyond providing the stadium, the Cardinals went the extra mile to support the Rams. They offered their Tempe practice facility, arranged transportation using their Gridiron Air fleet, and provided various amenities for the traveling party, including childcare options and access to a specialist at St. Joseph's Hospital for a high-risk pregnancy.
"Our organization is seen as a reliable partner, but the credit goes to the team,” Bidwill said, acknowledging the efforts of countless Cardinals staff members.
Goodell praised the Cardinals’ preparedness and Bidwill’s commitment to the league. “This reflects the spirit of Arizona – neighbors helping neighbors,” he said.
As Bidwill reflected before kickoff, he expressed empathy for those affected by the wildfires. “Our hearts break for Los Angeles. If hosting this game is what we can do to help, we’re all in. This community pulls together for those in need.”
The successful relocation demonstrated the Cardinals’ readiness to assist in emergencies, reinforcing their reputation as a dependable partner within the NFL.
